ASUU members at LAUTECH say they have to wait for the Congress decision before joining the strike.

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has joined the ongoing ASUU strike on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Recall that on Sunday, November 4, 2018, ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi declared an indefinite nationwide strike after the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State.

Explaining why LAUTECH didn’t join the strike immediately after it was declared, ASUU Chairman, LAUTECH chapter,  Dr Biodun Olaniran said,  the institution had to wait for the Congress decision before joining the strike.

He said ”the strike was announced on Sunday night around 9:30 pm and the practice of our union is that when they announced the strike you have to go back to you branches to conduct a congress to re-affirm that position and that’s what we’ve done. We called the Congress today and we decided to join the Nationwide strike”.

Commenting on the recent reduction of proposed tuition fee by the school management, Olaniran said LAUTECH ASUU members are against the development.

‘Our union has a clear position on increment tuition fee at any institution be it federal or state-owned. That is why our union has been on this particular issue for so long because we believe that the increment of tuition fee is to take education out of the reach of the poor man. So, our union members at all levels are against tuition increment”.

Olaniran added that the reduction of the proposed tuition won’t stand saying the union is against the idea of tuition increment and would continue to fight against it.
